I am an illustrator and fine artist who often works in the realms of anthropology. I have an MA in anthropology from University College London, and have studied at both the London Fine Art Studios and the Arts Student’s League, New York. My illustration and fine art work are very different, the one is always informing and improving the other, and through both I am using the process of creating artistic pieces to investigate what it means to be human.
I have recently completed an illustrated non-fiction book called Light in Dark Times, with anthropologist Alisse Waterston. It is being published by University of Toronto Press and out on the shelves in the October for US buyers and November for UK buyers!
I am now beginning to design some ethnographic research that aims to better understand the value created within the act of drawing. Educational institutions often find it difficult to invest in the arts because of the immeasurability of the value it adds to society. It is my hope that with foundational ethnographic and artistic research education systems might be better positioned to invest in the arts with confidence.
I also work on commissions, both digital illustrations and fine art paintings. Please get in touch if you’d like to chat about your idea. charlotte@cordenstudios.com
